03054: Celebratory Whimper

Sunday - KFC Takeout

The somewhat weird thing about your birthday being near the end of the month is that it can often feel a little anticlimactic. Sure, one can argue that the whole month becomes your "birthday month", as if that's supposed to mean something. In reality, people don't really think about your birthday until you get very close to it. If anything, more people will remember your birthday after the fact since social media feeds will remind them that the birthday has happened and they're already late in greeting. Given how I restrict a lot of content on my social pages, I work around this behavior by deliberately creating a post on each platform that helps collect most of the greetings in one place.

Back to the whole timing thing, the end of the month feels like a natural mental demarcation for events. So the initial instinct to remember said birthday fizzles once the month switches over in the same way that we're more likely to forget whatever was on our minds whenever we go through a doorway. Our brains are wired to recognize transition states like time markers and portals and just shunt surface thoughts further back. And this weekend really feels like a demonstration of that principle.

To be fair, the weather has been pretty horrible, and we ended up canceling Tobie's appearance at the Komiket Fully Booked event at BGC, which also canceled plans of meeting up with friends in the area. We could have tried to reschedule some of those plans to today, but ended up erring on the side of caution by staying home.

As previously discussed, I also did not make big plans for this weekend. Sure, I filed leave for Friday and Monday, which gives me a pretty long weekend. But it's not like I had a specific reason to do so apart from not wanting to work a bit. That's a totally valid reason to take leave, of course, but it also means my lack of birthday vibes for the weekend is largely because of my own efforts (and the lack thereof).

Extra credit has to go to friends who went out of their way to make sure the birthday still had its moments. Our main board game group already celebrated with me a week earlier as part of our monthly meetup. One friend reached out to try to join our birthday plans, so he managed to join us at O Bar on Thursday night. And others still had also been also invited by Tobie to show up at O Bar as well, which was something nice for a largely gloomy week. And I already talked about how the O Boys made this year feel special, as they have done for many years now. This is the extent of my social circle these days and acts as a reminder of which friends are still more active in my orbit.

At least we played board games and Magic last night from the safety of our homes. I squeezed in repeat viewings of Clue and History of the World: Part I, mainly because we didn't have immediate access to a copy of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And today has been mostly quiet given the continuing bad weather.

At the very least, we're going to O Bar again tonight, mainly to get to celebrate with some of the other queens who weren't on duty last Thursday. We might see a few other familiar faces, but I also kinda doubt it since (1) it's still a Sunday night and (2) most people made out-of-town plans for the long weekend.  That's fine; I've largely resigned myself to O Bar time mostly being about me and Tobie being there for the performers.

I hope you all had a good weekend despite the stressful weather.
