02D9F: Weekend Game Update and Pre-Flight Stuff

Sunday - Vast: The Mysterious Manor

We just got back from watching a touring production of Six, pretty much right after we had gamed all night with friends. That monthly gaming group meet-up also involved birthday festivities for the same friend we had celebrated on Friday night because he exists in many of our social circles. And to celebrate him properly. We made a distinct effort to bring as many Marvel-themed games to the table as possible because he's a big Avengers fan. And this meant us needing to load our Legendary: A Marvel Deckbuilding Game collection into luggage just to haul it out of the Sietch. It was a lot of carrying effort, but certainly worth the unique gaming experience.

So let's go through the list of games that we played!

We arrived early enough to tackle a heavier game with the available players and we finally dove into Vast: The Mysterious Manor. These asymmetric games by Leder Games are never easy to learn because you're actually learning 5 different game systems mashed together in one game in order to learn the whole experience. But it was a good Halloween-related choice that I was glad to get to the table. As we finished our game, the other players went through a few rounds of Splendor: Pokemon and Smash Up: Munchkin.

For the Marvel side of things, we got to play a few rounds of Marvel Fluxx, a hefty game of Marvel Villanous using all of our expansions and finally, we assembled the Avengers to fight Ultron in Legendary - and managed to win!

The other games for the night included the newly-released Survival of the Fattest, the always-stressful Town 77, and the deceptively tricky In Front of the Elevators. Our final game for the night was Ra, which still came through as a game that was easy enough to teach despite all of us being pretty tired by that time. But hey, we go through this because of a love of gaming and we got to play a respectable number of games to boot!

We tried to end a little earlier because we had the matinee show for Six this afternoon, but we still ended with the sun already up in the sky. But it was worth the time spent with some of our best gaming friends. We just had to make sure we didn't miss our play.

As is the way of such things, I actually work up earlier than my alarms, so being late was not an issue. We actually got there pretty early and had time to queue for a few of the photo backdrops because why not right? The play itself was super awesome and I'm glad that (1) the O Divas really helped to hype this up for us and (2) it was even more awesome to experience live beyond all the videos and official cast recordings. My only complaint, if ever, was that it was shorter than I would I have liked but it's not like it needed additional material or anything. I just wanted more of the whole experience.

I will need to reflect on this show a bit more before I share my thoughts in detail.

For now, I need to finish the last of my pre-trip preparations before I head to the airport at 03:00am. I've already completed all of my immigration-related documents and adjusted my seat as part of check-in. I have a load of laundry running but I should really finalize what clothes I'm going to bring to avoid undue stress. And I definitely don't want to miss my flight (again!) for obvious reasons.
