02D9C: Corralling Villains

Thursday - Villainous Board Game Collection

At present, our collection of Villainous-related board games consists of 3 big boxes, and 2 expansion boxes that consist of 1-3 new villains. This covers the Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars franchises and this translates into 46 separate characters, each with their respective character decks, realm boards, tokens, and related items. And this part of our collection, like Smash Up and Legendary before, takes up an obscene amount of space in a rather inefficient manner.

The amount of space that our Villainous games takes up is my current obsession given all the new board games that have been coming in. We have two large stacks taking up half the couch now with some overspill on some of the chairs. And we have guests over, we have to temporarily stash some of the games on our bed just to make space and it's a big reminder that we need to get our act together.

And while I continue to combine other game expansions with their base boxes where possible (take that Paleo!) we still need a lot more space. And my current big target is Villainous

At present, there does not appear to be a comprehensive storage solution for the game. I've gone through the websites of all the usual suspects in terms of custom inserts and organizers and nobody has anything that can handle this game - probably because it's not yet a complete game as the different franchises continue to grow. Thus most of the solutions I've seen online consist of different kinds of bins, cases, and boxes with the support of custom-printed tuck boxes, sticker labels, dividers, and whatnot. This is not a terrible approach - but just not as clean as getting some custom insert designed to work with the main game boxes or something.

I've relied on the BCW 3200 card bins to resolve our storage concerns for both Legendary and Smash Up and I'm not sure if that's the best solution for Villainous because of the realm boards being a weird shape. Or maybe I can get a smaller card bin for the character decks and then work with the base game boxes to hold all the realm boards and character tokens. That might be a better compromise that allows me to keep the base boxes at least and then make space by tossing out all of these expansion boxes.

Okay, I just came up with that idea now while writing this blog and I think I want to explore this.
