03078: Another Washing Machine Revival

Tuesday - Tahanan Tinola

There was enough to do at work to somewhat distract me from the fact that it took all day for the LG technicians to finally come over to check on the washing machine. As someone who has worked in customer service, I'm aware that these tech visits can't really schedule precise times for their visits since they never really know how long each appointment will take. As a customer, it's super annoying to wait all day and wonder if they're still going to show up.

As suspected, the loud noise I was hearing during spin cycles was something that had gotten loose inside the machine. What I had not expected was that it was the entire dryer heating element that was loose again. A good number of screws had vibrated themselves out of their slots even with the machine properly balanced, so the whole thing was an even greater nightmare waiting to happen. It looks like the damage in December had worn down some of the screw slots, so things were looser than they should have been. The previous techs had only returned all screws to where they were without adding any screws that still felt loose. Today's techs tried a variety of methods to tighten the screws, including slipping in a twist tie cord into the slot, like how one uses tox for walls, or just using slightly wider screws to sort of brute-force things. These may not sound like the most technical solutions, but I respect the ingenuity of on-the-ground repair guys. I don't think it was worth the labor costs they charged me, but I figure it's still cheaper than getting a new machine.

I did ask them what the average life of a washing machine is in their experience. Of course, they first said it depends, etc., but the answer I got was around 5 years. That made me feel a little better since we've had this machine since 2019, so it's not unreasonable that it has needed repairs more than a few times over the years. Sure, we could have been more careful with the coins and the leveling of the machine, but beyond that, I think we'd treated it well enough.

With that resolved, we have a LOT of laundry to catch up on given my recent trip. I just hope that I still get enough sunshine for better drying as the weather has been all over the place again this week.
