0304E: Birth Year Words

Monday - Dory Pasta

Work was pretty busy, but at least not to a crazy degree. The day started out sunny, so I loaded laundry and got to hang it for a bit. But we had a bit of rain in the afternoon, so I ended up running them in the dryer anyway, then hung them out after the cycle to finish the job. And I cooked dinner, so that felt prudent. One more home-cooked meal means less money wasted on delivery.

Merriam-Webster now has a Time Traveller feature (you can try that link) that lets you see which words were first recorded in print. I had seen a few contacts post a few words of interest from the year of their birth, so I figured I'd give it a shot. And the list feels like a weird slice of 80s life.

There were a lot of queer-related terms, but not super happy ones. Here are some key ones in alphabetical order:

  • acquired immune deficiency syndrome
  • acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
  • AIDS
  • gaydar
At least the tech stuff was a bit more interesting in a positive way:
  • 411
  • biochip
  • cyberspace
  • domain name
  • escape key
  • expansion card
  • hard drive
  • help screen
  • netiquette
  • pixelated
  • quantum computer
  • WYISWYG
And then there are other words that I just found interesting but don't easily fit a single category:
  • barista
  • boy toy
  • concealed carry
  • convo
  • dead tree
  • flip off
  • G-spot
  • home theater
  • imposter syndrome
  • in-your-face
  • letterboxed
  • logline
  • merch
  • microbrewery
  • MRI
  • multitaskter
  • narco-terrorism
  • overshare
  • phone sex
  • plushie
  • Rolodex
  • rust belt
  • surrogacy
  • tinfoil hat
  • tiramisu
  • triathlete
  • turducken
  • type 1 diabetes
  • type 2 diabetes
  • Valley girl
  • VJ
  • water park
I know, I know, weird things interest me.
