02F7D: Computer Annoyances

Tuesday - O Bar Mixed Sausage & Eggs

I mentioned the other day that I have some annoying laptop issues as of late. Now I'm finally going to talk about what's going on.

It started with a minor issue that has come and gone ever since I got this laptop. Sometimes my display won't turn back on after it goes into sleep mode, something that automatically happens after 5 minutes of inactivity. I decided to finally try tackling it as we entered the weekend, and thus I went through various troubleshooting steps, including updating my video card drivers and updating the laptop BIOS. Most of the video drivers installed okay, but one kept failing to the point that the entire computer would freeze mid-install. Then there's a new issue where my computer doesn't want to shut down to restart properly. So when I trigger a shutdown, the screen goes back, but you can still hear the fa,n and the keyboard remains lit up. When I trigger a restart, the whole system freezes mid-restart. In all these cases, the only solution is to force a shutdown and start again.

There were some scary moments throughout the weekend when it wouldn't even start correctly after multiple forced shutdowns. Then I'd walk away, focus on board games with friends, but still think about it in the back of my mind. By Sunday, I tried rolling things back to a system restore point before the last Windows Update, which is when I think things started to go wrong again. But even getting the System Restore rolled back was tricky since that process requires a restart.

After several tries (and delaying our Pendragon game last Sunday), I at least got to the previous Restore point, but things were the same. I'm guessing the updated BIOS is still fighting with the video drivers or something. I've disabled the quick shutdown for now, so my computer won't go to sleep so quickly. It still won't restart or shut down properly, so the underlying issue is still there. At this point, my only other solution is to reinstall Windows or something, but I'll wait for the weekend before I do something so drastic. It's not too painful since I mostly operate out of the cloud because of many laptop issues over the years. I'm so used to needing to jump computers at the drop of a hat because I have weird tech episodes like this.

If anyone has any tips, feel free to let me know.
