01EB1: Another Broken Mug

Monday - Beef Nilaga

I broke my Star Trek mug today.

It wasn't a particularly special mug. Its main value was that it was one of the biggest mugs in the Sietch and it can easily handle the 2-cup setting of our Delonghi machine. I got it as a freebie from my Eaglemoss Star Trek Starships subscription and had to pay extra to get it shipped from my US receiving address to the Philippines, and it miraculously survived the trip. The material of the cup always felt thinner than I'd like, especially compared to all the other mugs we have at the Sietch. And I broke it today - just accidentally elbowed it off the table since I was turning in that direction and it was sort of behind me - or at least behind my arm.

Me being clumsy is not news. I am terribly, terribly clumsy. People may know me to be quite careful about many things, and this higher degree of caution is precisely because of my natural clumsiness and my lifelong struggle to stay a few steps ahead of the above-average likelihood of getting into an accident. I still end up with random cuts and nicks on my hands and in different parts of my body that I rarely know how I managed to get - I just discover them when I take a bath or wash my hands. It has been a lifelong struggle, but what can you do, right? You just roll with things.

These days, my biggest fear is slipping on a wet tile and hitting my head. There are a few tiled areas around the property, with some of them right outside the Sietch. I feel myself slipping here and there as I walk, and I constantly remind myself to be careful. Otherwise, disaster may strike.

This ties to my lifelong efforts to terrify myself into being careful. My mind constantly runs scenarios for what accidents I can get into, which is a rather morbid way to be more careful by thinking of how to avoid such potential accidents. Despite all those efforts, the accidents still happen.

The silver lining of the day is that I didn't hurt myself in the process. Tobier was more immediately concerned about that happening. It was a clean break for the much, and it broke up into many pieces and (thus far?) I have not cut myself on any of the fragments. I think Tobie and I were able to clean up the mess fully, but we'll see how things go.

Be safer than me, everyone.
