02DA4: End of a Tiring Week

Friday - gamescom asia 2024

I still haven't purchased the Kindle Oasis as it still seems steadily 50% off in my Amazon cart. My compromise to myself (and my eagerness) would be to hold until tomorrow night and then place the order. Given it's the weekend, all card transactions will get processed on Monday anyway, so that'll be safely within my new credit card cycle.

Today I finally got to check out gamescom asia after supporting the event for years, albeit remotely. Today's technically the preview day for Super Fan ticket holders so there weren't any events at the main stage. That made it a good day to visit in order to check out the booths freely and just see this event in person for a change.

Of course, I spent the bulk of my time at the board game booth in order to check out whatever Origame had to display. They were running demos of Overparked, their most recent Kickstartter project but also had demos for new small box games Cubemelt and Chock-a-Block. I really wanted to get the block game, but they didn't have any in stock for the day. So I walked away with the cute ice cube game that should make for interesting game sessions. Plus I got to spend some time chatting with Daryl Chow, the guy who brought so many of their games to life. He's a pretty chill guy but one who's quite eager to show off his stuff.

And the best bit was finally meeting my clients in person after years of working together. The bulk of what we do has been ad-related and that doesn't need a lot of in-person time, admittedly. So this year we made sure to arrange things such that I'd be in town for the event. I'm pretty tired now even from the brief time we spent there, but no regrets for sure.

We don't have big plans this weekend as the boys are a full-time job. I do hope to get a good amount of reading in, but recently I've been updating my Goodreads account with whichever children's books I end up reading aloud for the boys. Reading is still reading after all, even if it involves making funny voices and a child deciding when to turn the page regardless of if you've finished reading or not.

Good times.
