03075: Last Day Panic

Saturday - Birthday King Crab

Today started on a very bad note.

So I'm used to my asthma being a bit elevated when I'm in Singapore, since it's a new environment and my sister has a dog in the house. My room is kept off-limits, so I have a place to hide to breathe, but realistically, he triggers my allergies more than my asthma. This is one of my rare trips during the annual haze season, and I expected that to be a possible trigger, so I made sure to have a fresh inhaler with me when I left Manila. I've needed to puff here and there, with one notably bad asthma bout on the morning of the 29th, but that was it. There's probably also the fact that I've woken up with my inhaler with me in bed (as opposed to being on the side table), which means I took a puff while not being full aware I had done so while sleeping.

Last night, things seemed initially fine while I was working on this week's Geeky Guide article while chatting with Tobie, and eventually I headed to bed. However, I kept waking up feeling a little wheezy, so I'd reach for my inhaler, take a puff, and then go back to sleep. But by around 4 or 5 in the morning, I realized that I needed to put conscious effort into breathing, and my inhaler was not providing immediate relief. I tossed and turned a bit, tried to use some breathing techniques to stay calm, and spammed my inhaler some more until I started to worry that something was wrong. At the very least, the inhaler is supposed to provide some relief after the puff, but that wasn't the case - or the relief was very limited. I tried sitting up, turning the AC off, among other things in an effort to try to determine what was causing the attack. Closer to 6am, I gave up and left the room entirely and went to the dining room to brew myself some coffee (caffeinating is reassuring during respiratory distress) in the hopes that whatever was triggering me wouldn't follow me down. I did begin to settle down in time, but I was still wheezy. I eventually settled down on one of the recliners and managed to get some sleep after all that.

Thankfully, the turbulent night didn't overly impact my ability to function today. I got to join the boys for their weekly swimming class, followed by a very hearty lunch at a Taiwanese restaurant. Then we hit the grocery to pick up a LOT of seafood for the nephew's birthday dinner, and I also got the bulk of my pasalubong shopping done.

I fell asleep again at some point after getting home, and then it was time for the birthday dinner. Friends of the family came over to round out the party and to help with the ridiculous amount of food that my sister had prepared. It was all great, and the nephew got the king crab that he wanted.

I just want to get a good night's sleep before it's time to fly back to Manila tomorrow. I've mostly packed my luggage save for my toiletries, and I've switched my Alpaka loadout back to the Flight Sling after using my Flow Satchel as my EDC this whole trip. I already know it's a very full flight since it's a smaller aircraft, so I really need everything else to go well.

Help me, Universe.
