03056: Some Tracking Updates

Tuesday - Tahanan Lunch

I read 35 titles in the month of August, which is pretty good considering I've been lagging behind my one-book-a-day goal for more months in the year than I'd like. Part of my progress is making smarter reading choices in terms of book length, but also indulging myself in book series I've been enjoying more. The two series I celebrated most last month are Dungeon Crawler Carl (Amazon affiliate link) and The Murderbot Diaries (Amazon affiliate link). Both are well-written, but the latter has the bonus of consisting of pretty short books at about 150 pages each. The other factor is getting on board with The StoryGraph, which is proving to be quite the nerdier alternative to largely unchanging Goodreads. I'm not ready to switch book tracking platforms entirely, especially given how my Kindle pretty much automatically pushes updates to Goodreads on its own. But I am really enjoying the greater amount of detail that StoryGraph lets me analyze, and it has resulted in positive changes to my reading habits, including tracking mid-book progress more often, just to see how that affects the pages read statistic throughout the month.

I just need to better manage my reading timing, as I keep staying up late to finish another book when things really get going. The shorter Murderbot books are particularly dangerous since they're all short and quite fast-paced, resulting in more than a few nights that had me sleeping 1-2 hours beyond my target bedtime because I ended up finishing another book.

I also purchased the Board Game Stats app for my phone, which was my other promised change to my nerdery. The transition wasn't all that drastic, as I am quite used to tracking our board game plays. But I have started to get excited about the nuances of tracking available, including tags for who was the starting player for a game or how long the game took in terms of both rounds and minutes. I'm not yet sure where this data is going to go, but I'm starting to track it as best as I can, if only to see if some new insights will emerge in time. The app was a one-time purchase, which is great as I'm trying to minimize the financial risks of signing up for more subscription services. I rather like where this might go, but only time will tell.
