We knew that Luthier would be a rather heavy game, as it seemed to have all the trappings of something like a Vital Lacerda game. Lacerda remains our benchmark for game complexity since the guy kinda goes bonkers with systems and providing players with nuanced strategies. While it's still quite the heavy board game, it's not as crazy as some others, yet it still provides a generous amount of possible paths to victory for players to explore. It's a gem of a game, and I'm glad that Tobie managed to snag a copy for us so soon.
The rest of last night's game session was a little lighter since people were pretty tired already. Our palate cleanse game after the heavy stuff was Flip 7 With a Vengeance, which definitely has more interaction, but doesn't feel as fun as the original game. There's something truly delightful about how the original game has become this pure celebration of push-your-luck games, while this version feels needlessly punishing at times. In the end, I'm sure this is the experience they wanted to create with the game, so it's not necessarily bad. It's just very different and may not feel like our core gameplay.
Our final game for the night was Exit's take on a Catan scenario. This is their second venture into creating an Exit experience for another IP after The Lord of the Rings, and the second board game escape room we've gotten to play through after Unlock's take on things. It was a pretty solid adventure, even if it felt like it held players' hands a bit more aggressively than other Exit games of the 3-dot level of difficulty. There were still some puzzles that weren't immediately intuitive and would take us a bit longer to figure out before we could move forward. At the very least, it was an interesting effort to tell a story tied to the board game, and it was still a good amount of fun.
Today we had another session of our long-running Pendragon RPG campaign, and thankfully, all of the players were able to make it. Even as an online game, we still struggle with getting everyone together for every session, but it's worth the resulting story to make sure we get everyone on the video call. We have another session closer to the end of the month, which is cool since we don't often have two sessions in a month. It's our only active RPG session these days, so a lot is riding on it unitl we get find another group to play a different campaign with.
I hope you all had a great weekend.
