The stay-in helper is on leave this week, so we took this opportunity to try a meal service for a week. I haven't been on a subscription meal service since my early days of keto, so I had a general sense of what to expect. For this round, we've only subscribed to one week of lunches by The Hearty Grub, mainly because they seemed fairly affordable and they had a wide range of meal options. And we just need a little help with food for the week, thus us not going for a full 3 meals a day.
Case in point, the photo above shows my keto meal and Tobie's pescetarian meal, which represent two very different approaches to the same lunch. Both are "Mongolian"-style dishes - mine is beef, and Tobie's is a white fish (probably dory). I have trace amounts of keto-friendly rice (I kind of wish they had gone for shirataki in this case), while Tobie has red rice. And we both ended up with carrots as the vegetable side. You can't immediately tell based on appearance alone, but my meal is supposed to be 100 calories more than Tobie's.
The food tastes okay, at least, and the general meal concepts have been good enough. I think my only objection is their approach to keto meals, because they end up looking terribly less substantial than the other variants. Even their low-carb meal (which Tobie's mom is getting) has red rice, albeit in a more limited quantity than Tobie's meal. Tomorrow will be our third day, and I think I'll come to a "final" decision on what we'll do next week. At least it's cheaper than ordering mostly keto-compliant takeout, so there's that. But at the moment, I'm leaning towards their low-carb meal more than their keto one should we need to re-subscribe in the future.
This is also why I prefer to cook our own stuff more than get food from services. But I'm not always motivated to cook, so this is also a decent kick in the rear to just cook more. I recognize that I also need to expand my menu so I don't bore myself with my own meals.
