We greeted Tobie's birthday with a good mix of board games with other friends, which is probably the best way for us to celebrate. We started by introducing our guests to the wonders of Suburbia, which is still one of my favorite city-building games. And while the collector's edition does feel a little over-designed, it still looks great on the table.
We followed that up with two light Asian board games. The first is the quirky Japanese card game Phone, Wallet, Keys, which is totally the sort of game theme you're thinking of. It's not the greatest game in the world, but it's quite cute, especially as an indie effort. Then we proceeded to the much more elegantly designed Shall We Dance, which is not only beautifully presented, but also a lot of good fun.
We balanced things off with Smash Up being our last big group game, and it went on as long as you'd expect a 4-player Smash Up game to go. It has been a number of years since we last dug the game out of storage, and I'll admit that I really enjoyed it, especially given all the expansions we had collected over the years. One of the players had to go home at this point, but we had a last big game session of Trickerion, because Tobie really does enjoy these big games.
We have another game night today, and it almost felt like we weren't going to make it since life was being weird. Just as we were leaving the Sietch, we discovered that our car's battery was dead. The timing felt absolutely terrible, but these things happen. A Motolite guy was able to come over and replace it soon enough, but we still lost an hour of time to that little mishap.
