Tobie didn't want to make a big deal about his birthday this year, and this included not going through the effort to organize some sort of celebration at O Bar. With all of our challenges in organizing tables in recent months, Tobie didn't want to go through the stress of inviting people, waiting for them to confirm, and finding alternates when primary invitees proved to be unavailable. But we still went to O Bar last night because Thursdays are the chill sort of queer fun that we enjoy, and it would be good to get out. There were still some Thursday regulars who were helped with our "anticipated" birthday celebrations, and some unexpected friends who showed up at the bar mid-week.
As much as we expected the O Boys to do something special for Tobie, he figured it would be over the weekend when we go again in order for the group to be more complete. But I had a good hunch that they'd still push for something last night because they can be big on making sure anything they do happens on, if not before, the actual event instead of after. Tobie had also requested that they avoid getting him a cake since it would mean extra expense for them, and we tend to get a LOT of cakes around his birthday. They complied, but still felt that Tobie needed to blow something to mark the event, hence the hilarious ball of string with a candle in it.
The real surprise was the lovely gift they had prepared. They got Tobie a fun summer polo, but went the extra mile and hand-embroidered "O Boys" on it. And while it's not my birthday, they still made sure that I had a shirt, too, since they know we like to match outfits. Tobie tried to play a Reverse card by bringing cookies to share with the group, so needless to say, it was a great night. And the O Boys, as always, played a HUGE part in starting our birthday celebrations right. Again, and again, and again, we're reminded why we love the group so much.
Tobie and I were on leave from work today, so we got to sleep in after O Bar. We got up in time for lunch with Tobie's mom at Conti's, which was an excuse to get their Mango Bravo for dessert. Their lunch options were pretty good, too, but admittedly, you don't really go to Conti's for the food alone. This led to a lovely afternoon together as we also settled a few errands before heading back to the Sietch.
Tonight, we have a few friends coming over for board games because no Tobie birthday weekend would be complete without tabletop gaming. We have game night set for tomorrow, so we'll be up late back-to-back this weekend as we try to make sure he has a great birthday celebration.
