02F97: Site Recovery and More Gaming

Sunday - Tend Board Game

The Geeky Guide now has over 60 board game reviews published, with more on the way. I'm getting into a pretty steady rhythm for churning out new posts, and I'm trying to catch up with the some 900 titles that we've had a chance to play or at least test. There's a part of me that's pretty eager to start working on book reviews as well, but I know I need to get the board games side of things stabilized first.

I've been going over the Google Analytics and Search Console data for the site ever since I re-launched on Friday night, and it's a bit of a depressing initial state of affairs. The majority of my site traffic in the last 3 months or so appears to be bot traffic coming from China and, to some degree, Singapore. Most content that sort of ranks well on Search is more niche content for local gay movies and such, which is all content that I've stripped from the new version of the site due to lack of relevance. I accept that the first 30 days or so of the site will be a lot of triage as I dissect the traffic going to my 404 page and determine if I want to accommodate any of them or just move on and focus on stuff moving forward.

I really need to focus on recapturing the larger gaming market of users in the US, UK, or even Germany. I used to get a lot more traffic from countries like that before the site went inactive. I've been checking and re-checking my stats throughout the day, which brings to mind the old adage about how watched pots never boil. I hope we'll start to see a more positive shift in things after the first week of the new site. I'm still waiting for Google Search to realize that the site is active again and for Google AdSense to approve the new site so we can start running Display ads at least. It won't earn anything in the short term, but it'll still count for something.

Outside of all this, we had a fun game night last night, even though we technically only played a handful of games. We tackled two big ones - the massive roll-and-write Tend and the weird auction and tile placement game Keyflower. But we also made time for two quick games, the Chinese New Year-themed Huat's Up! and the unusual "pattern" matching game Petiquette. That still took up most of the night, so I can't complain that we didn't play enough. Plus, we were a smaller player group last night, so we only had one active table instead of two like in other months. It was still a good game night overall.

Let's see what the new workweek brings all of us!
