02F82: Sunday Notes

Sunday - With Bernie at O Bar

Last night at O Bar was a blast as it was Bernie's birthday show, and it was EPIC. O Bar events typically include some really big production numbers to open and close the show - that's not something new. Bernie's lineup included a lot of big productions and a good mix of solo numbers that were just so good. But what else would you expect from the likes of Bernie? She's a phenomenal performer with so many levels, and last night's show was an excellent showcase of what makes her such a beloved O Diva.

We had an interesting mix of friends with us at the table last night, and everyone had a good time. There were also a good number of familiar friends at the bar, and I managed to get photos with most of them. Documentation remains very important to me.

Our initial plan for today was to rearrange some of our games to make the ones we like to be more accessible. However, Tobie is still dealing with a bad allergic reaction to some of the dusty games we brought out for game night on Friday, so we deferred that plan for now.

I've continued to work on my revamp of The Geeky Guide - including deciding to drop "...to Nearly Everything" from the title as I focus it more on board games and book content. I've set up the database for all of our 1600+ board games and have started to populate review notes and other stats you don't typically find on BoardGameGeek, the definitive source for board game information on the internet. I've also managed to export all blog posts from the Geeky Guide, cleaned up the coding to get rid of all the messy Blogger syntax, and have tagged and curated some 1200 of the 4k+ posts to migrate to the new site.

The next big step is figuring out my web template, so I'm trying to teach myself how to navigate around Webflow, which is supposedly my best option for managing such content at scale via a CMS. The minor stumbling block is that Webflow's price tiers have rather particular CMS limits, which I need, given how I'm going to configure this new version of the blog. Instead of typical blog pages, I'm setting up all "articles" as database entries, and those will get pushed from Airtable to Webflow as posts (once I decide on which service I'll use to push from Airtable). But the number of CMS items is pushing me up the pricing tier for things, so it looks like I'll be playing for business-level plans for multiple services. It's rather technical, but I think I can figure it out. I'm just trying to be methodical about things and avoiding subscribing to the paid tiers of services until absolutely necessary.

I'm still on the free trial for Airtable, but I'm feeling comfortable enough with the service to bite the bullet and pay for it. My progress with Webflow is also feeling a little symied by the limitations of what's available in the free tier of service, and I may need to subscribe sooner, even before I migrate stuff. I'm trying to bootstrap things for now, but it might be smarter to just hire someone to design the Webflow site for me, then proceed from there. I don't even have a good idea of what color scheme I should use for the new site -  we'll see what I can figure out for now before I determine if I can really handle this on my own.
