02F81: Friday Revival Gaming

Saturday - Steampunk Rally

Game night last night was interesting because we ended up bringing out a number of older games to shake things up a bit. And with my ongoing game database development efforts, cycling through older games is super helpful.

We did start with a newer game - Only Murders in the Building: The Game. We had received this as a gift some time back and only got it to the table this month. It's proving to be a very delightful sort of deduction game where the mystery isn't that hard - but managing the three main characters is the real challenge.  It nicely captures the feel of the show, and I'm glad that we have a copy. We also squeezed in a first session of the deckbuilding game ATLA: Aang's Destiny, which is based on the Hogwarts Battle system. It was a quaint Book 1 game, and the manual did stress that the first two boxes may feel like they're below the level of complexity of most deckbuilding games. We could totally go back to this,

Then, in an effort to help our guest avoid playing too many Vital Lacerda games at once, Tobie started digging up games from the archives. To satisfy the request for an engine-building game, Tobie brought out the ever-zany Steampunk Rally. It's a weird racing game that literally is an engine-building game as you try to race across the "board". The next game was even more surprising - the punishing, real-time cooperative game XCOM: The Board Game. We managed to get through the app-driven tutorial game, but even that was a bit of a near miss. It was interesting to see the game again, for sure. The other old game that we ended the night with was Century Spice Road. It's still a pleasant game, but I don't get why people tried to hype it up as a "Splendor-killer" when it first came out.

We still have many new games that we need to make time to learn and such, but we'll get around to them in time.
