So we had a fun little intro game night for a friend yesterday and managed to play a heck of a lot of games. As much as we enjoy the heavier stuff, it is nice to go through our lighter games at times as we rack up a lot more plays across the session.
Our warm-up stuff included modern classics card games like Flip 7, Love Letter, Seventh Hero, and 13 Animals. A lot of gateway games are inevitably smaller card games that have a lower barrier to entry both in terms of rules complexity and cost to acquire the games themselves. That doesn't make them any less fun, especially with the right players.
Then we started to scale up a bit with Mooncake Master, The Little Prince: Make Me a Planet, Splendor: Pokémon, with a random round of Spots as a palate cleanser. We have a good number of tile-based games with very different approaches to things. It is amusing how similar Mooncake Master and The Little Prince games actually are - something Tobie pointed out as we went through the games. And the Pokémon version of Splendor truly is a gem and an excellent upgrade to the base Splendor experience.
We rarely bring in entirely new games for beginner game nights like this, but I couldn't resist introducing the ATLA board game Crossroads of Destiny. Given our ongoing frustrations with Fire Nation Rising, it was nice to play a game that felt like it worked a lot better while still presenting a decent amount of challenge. Plus, this game comes with a longer journey/campaign mode that presents a more interesting longer term play experience.
We're gaming again today with two different friends whom I hope wills still be able to catch one another given complications in scheduling. It's unlikely that we'll be able to play a game with all four of us, so we'll work with whatever we can get.
