Work was pretty busy again, but I managed to clear my tasks by the end of the day. Google's Gemini remains my virtual assistant across my tasks, mainly for number crunching and helping me sift through data sets. Even the latest Pro model is still rather buggy at times, and you have to watch your AI output like a hawk. It's still a timesaver in the long term, as long as you don't take any output at face value. Human input and scrutiny are still needed to check whatever is generated and to ensure it still makes sense.
I wonder if I should switch to voice input at some point. I end up doing a LOT of typing to keep the AI in line and on the right track. It's still a big timesaver, but I'm pretty sure it's not taking anyone's job away anytime soon.
In other news, I received a weird call from an unknown number claiming to be from the BPI Main office. They were confirming that I had received my credit card and were supposedly wondering why I hadn't claimed my welcome gift that came with the card. There was some convoluted explanation that I had been given "30,000 reward points" that could be converted into 6k plus Sodexo GCs. This didn't make sense since I wasn't a brand-new BPI credit card customer, plus the supposed gift was going to be delivered to my home address as an actual check. I told the guy that BPI wouldn't do that and that I'd rather get an email about this or talk directly to customer service. I ended the call at that point, as I already figured their goal was to verify my home address or something, which would be valuable for getting through customer service on their own.
It was a little troubling that the guy knew what type of credit card I had and at least had the last 4 digits. To be fair, that's information you can probably derive from any credit card receipt, whether my copies (which I at least try to rip up before throwing away) or any of the merchant copies out there. I know a lot of people avoid answering calls from numbers they don't know as a matter of principle, but I still make the time since (1) I still get work calls from vendors and such, and (2) I like trying to suss out scammers like this. I immediately called BPI after the weird call to report the situation and share the number of the caller. I don't think they'll be able to get any decent information from the owner of the number, but at least it's out there.
It's sad that this keeps happening, and one can only imagine how many people fall for scams like this. I'll keep blogging about them every time it happens, if only to help raise awareness.
