Across our 16 years of being together, Tobie and I have really leaned into being the sort of couple that wears paired shirts when we go out. It started with a few gift shirts and then shirts that we bought for specific events like Pride Marches and White Parties. Then one thing led to another, and now a good chunk of our wardrobe consists of couples' shirts.
There are two ways to go about this sort of thing. First, we get two of the same shirts and embrace the sheer cheesy ridiculousness of this. It sort of makes sense when we're at queer-friendly spaces like O Bar - people just get it. But when we go to other venues like supermarkets or theaters - sometimes we get funny looks. It just comes with the territory. Other times, we go a little thematic. Either we get two shirts in the same style but in different colors - more often than not I have something more blue, and Tobie has something more green. In other cases, we get related but not necessarily duplicate shirts, like how we have two different Pokémon shirts or how we have two different Star Wars shirts.
Some people find it endearing. Some find it silly. Some strangers think we're brothers. Such is life.
Today we bought new shirts that we plan to wear this weekend at O Bar's 20th anniversary event. Since we're no longer based in BGC, we've shifted from Old Navy as our main source of shirts and have jumped onto the Uniqlo train, mainly out of convenience. I concede that these shirts are actually cheaper than Old Navy shirts, even when they're not on sale, but we just run the increased risk of running into other people wearing the same shirts. It has already happened to us at O Bar at least twice now, but those are the kicks. We had already scouted out what style of shirt we wanted to get, but we hadn't decided on which colors to get. We tried both a duplicate color option and we tried a blue and green combination of the same style of shirt, and...had decisions to make.
You'll see what we got after I share photos from Saturday. We wanted to get something with buttons in order to feel like a level higher than your average shirt, but we also didn't want to be overly formal since the rooftop venue of the event means we won't be in a comfy air-conditioned space all night. I like what we ended up with. I'll just need to figure out where to hang it as our closet is already pretty full.
