02F3F: Social Media Patterns

Wednesday - Wyrmspan

Tobie was out for most of the day for a thing, so I was alone at the Sietch for most of the day as well. Work kept me busy and gave me people to talk to, so there's that. But it also resulted in a distinct lack of reasons to document things like lunch (since I mostly ate leftovers) or random funny things (typically, this is Tobie). So today's blog header comes from the weekend - contemplate on what this means with regard to my habits related to this blog.

Social media is a performance. This is an accepted truth. Everything that appears on social media was posted deliberately. There was some thought involved. A choice was made. A message was crafted. Someone hit publish.

As someone involved in digital marketing, I'm particularly conscious of how social media is a communication tool. Heck, I know my feeds are particularly "noisy", and that's largely by design. Some protect their privacy by posting very little and significantly limiting who can see their posts. I'm one of those "hides in plain sight" kind of guys who tries to overwhelm people with updates in order to let other things slip by.

This probably includes this blog post.

Sometimes, connecting with people on social media can feel like a bad idea. A nice first impression can quickly sour once you see the kind of updates they post online. Even if they're just "shitposting" or are somehow being ironic, what they choose to say online and how they say it remains something they're accountable for. Most of it is deliberate. But there are subtler things that slip through the cracks - patterns in their posts that reflect their larger communication style.

It's a curse, seeing patterns like this. Sure, maybe I'm just reading into things. But I'm also entitled to my opinions. And if I don't like the things you choose to say online, well...it's going to lead to a very uncomfortable conversation the next time we see each other in peron.
