We're all worried about Typhoon Uwan/Fung-Wong this weekend, but things have been relatively calm enough today. The worst of it (for our area) is expected sometime tomorrow, so we've pushed through with our scheduled board game night for today, and we're all the better for it. Our guests for today are both pretty experienced, so it opens the doors to tackling more complex games versus our usual gateway game selections for newer players.
But I'll go into more detail about our games in my Sunday blog post. I have other things on my mind.
I've kind of added an additional layer of stress to my reading by adding yet another book to my juggling queue. You see, typically I have a book I've personally chosen to read on my Kindle, one related to work, one for our family book club, then a comic for lighter reading. But one thing has led to another, and I've added a lighter personal book choice to my reading load in order to speed along my completed book count since my personal book (presently Babel) is proving to be a heavier read than expected, thus it is taking longer than I'd like. I should just rely on my comics for quick completions instead of adding another book to what I juggle, but lately I've been reading shallower gay romances as a sort of palate cleanser.
This now has me wanting to go back to familiar reads as "lighter" material since they're books that I've already read. One prime candidate is the Discworld novels, as it has been quite a while since I've re-read the books in this fabulous series. I still have the BattleTech Dark Age novels to return to as well, but I will concede that the setting isn't that engaging for me. Then there's the odd desire to revisit the Magic: the Gathering novels, as I had read most of the books until Invasion, but not much beyond that. I'm still holding back on actively collecting the cards again, but I am quite curious about the lore as it has developed over the years.
I should just hunker down and try to finish Babel before I go back to such diversions. It's not that it's a bad book - it's very well written and the story is indeed compelling. But it's also quite heavy given both a clear love for the nuances of languages and translation, along with some heavy discussions related to the impact of colonialism.
I hope you all have a safe and relatively dry weekend.
