Let's talk about all the board games we played yesterday (until this morning).
Our initial gaming was Marvel-focused while waiting for everyone else to arrive. We started with Marvel Munchkin (Amazon affiliate link), complete with its two expansions. Munchkin is always a rather silly game with significantly wild swings of fortune throughout the game experience, and this Marvel version was no exception. Adding in the two expansions added in more affiliations like The Defenders and The Guardians of the Galaxy, which kinda diluted things further to make it that much harder to assemble a decent collection of items and powers to take down the "monster" villains. We followed that with Infinity Gauntlet: A Love Letter Card Game (Amazon affiliate link), which was surprisingly different from the original game but still familiar enough to feel like a related game in the line. Switching things to a one-versus-many format with a chance for heroes to "inevitably" win if they survive long enough makes for an interesting table experience.
At that point, the group split into two tables in order to get more games moving. Our table played Legendary Encounters: Alien, because I had a bit of a hangover from the Alien: Earth TV series. We played the first movie scenario again, and didn't make it through. But that's just how this game goes - it's very thematic and nicely captures the feel of the movies - but that comes at the price of a rather high difficulty level. The other table played La Fleur (Amazon affiliate link), which is all about making Rococo gardens. We also got to try this at the end of the night, and the game is a little quirky. The core action selection and set collection mechanics are straightforward enough, but a lot about the game can be rather punishing, and if you score good points early on, you kinda keep going until the end of the game.
The other big game that we got to play was Wondrous Creatures (Amazon affiliate link) AGAIN, because it's quite a lot of fun despite the many moving parts. I started with a pretty decent engine, but couldn't quite keep it going steadily until the end. Tobie snagged that win, but we all had a good time playing it.
There were a lot of smaller games that made up the rest of the night. There's the ever-shifting card-shedding game Ruins, with its very creative use of acetate cards to add the option to change the mix of cards over time. We finally got to bring out Moving Wild (Amazon affiliate link), another little Oink Game with some rather cutthroat balance concerns. There was the surprisingly difficult memory-based party game That's Not a Hat (Amazon affiliate link), which felt deceptively easy as I read the rules out to everyone. But once we started playing through the round, things broke down into a lot of silly laughing as we all struggled to keep track of all the "gifts" going around the table. The other table got to play a round of Harmonies (Amazon affiliate link), which is always a safe medium-weight "in-between" game for our group. And there were some silly Barbecubes (Amazon affiliate link) and Tik Tac Trek (Amazon affiliate link) sessions on the side as other players waited for our table to finish playing.
We got home rather late, but that was to be expected after a full night of board games. Tobie and I woke up close to 03:00pm and only got out of bed because we still had a Pendragon RPG session to play through today. We'll be going to O Bar later to make the most of my work holiday tomorrow. It's a generally nice weekend despite the rather rainy weather.
