02F11: Gaming Adjacent Saturday

Saturday - Gaming Meet Up

So a friend pulled through last night, and we got to play a few board games online. We first went through the Steam version of Concordia (since BGA was temporarily down). Once Board Game Arena came back, we ended up playing a few quick staples like Flip 7 and Incan Gold, but really focused on a full session of Galactic Cruise, which is still in beta on the platform. Playing online can feel faster when it comes to things like setup and scoring, but can also feel slower, depending on the game UI and how its design handles the many, many chances players have for actions and other decisions. Either way, it's still such a blessing to even have options for playing remotely with friends.

Our day started with the doorknob replacement. We weren't 100% sure if the guy would arrive, but he did and got the new knob swapped in pretty quickly. I was kinda hoping that we'd also be able to install a deadbolt that I had bought way back during our Cubao days, but it didn't quite fit our existing door design. Switching to this model would require drilling into the door and such, so we'll save that effort for another day.

In the afternoon, we had a friend over and had a different kind of gaming day. Instead of playing games, we just talked about different games and their mechanics to see how they can inform other games in the future. It certainly made for a very interesting discussion, and all throughout Tobie never seemed to run out of examples of other games to consider. His gaming vocabulary is kinda bonkers, and it shows when we have conversations like this. If only there were more immediate financial returns for the sort of game design mentorship he's capable of - we'd be set for life. He's really THAT good.

It's just a shame he couldn't stay longer in order to actually play a few games. That would have really rounded out the night.
