02F01: Solar Opportunity

Thursday - Tahanan Tinola

Miracle of miracles, the sun was actually out this morning, so I rushed a load of laundry while there was a window of opportunity. Of course, the entire household had the same idea, so I did a priority load that was based more around what was essential while ignoring my usual color sorting. I also set the dryer to run for at least an hour before hanging the clothes, just to help things along. It was a rather heavy load, and the dryer only helped a wee bit - the rest had to bank on what limited sun I could get. The good times lasted until just after lunch, then the rain came pouring down again. The clothes were mostly dry, but not dry enough to put away in the cabinet. Thus, I have piles of folded clothes on the dining table so that the fan can also help dry them.

I had originally left them in the bedroom with that fan on, but that fan died suddenly. It was okay initially, but shortly after I finished work, I started pacing the Sietch and was surprised to see that the bedroom fan appeared to be off - I assume Tobie had turned it off at some point. But at that moment, I saw a quick flash accompanied by a popping noise coming from the fan's motor housing. I guess it had stalled at some point, then overheated (?) and then literally burned out. It was connected to an extension cord, so it was easy enough to toggle that off. Nothing else seemed wrong, which is reassuring given that this is on the same circuit whose circuit breaker we had replaced. It was an older fan from the BGC days, but we've yet to have one die on us so violently. It's all just a good reminder that one should not leave appliances like fans on unattended. We would have caught it eventually, but it certainly felt like oddly fortuitous timing for me to enter the room right before it went snap-crackle-pop.

Typhoon Opong/Bualoi is expected to make landfall early tomorrow morning and should be around Metro Manila by Friday night. The storm path seems to have shifted a little south since I last checked, as the old path was supposed to cross right over Metro Manila. But that's how tropical weather goes - it's an ever-evolving situation. Let's just hope things won't be too bad come the weekend.
