We managed to catch PETA's repeat run of Walang Aray today, and it was SO GOOD. I had heard good things about it here and there, but we just never got around to seeing it. It was a little ironic that we finally got to see it now that we live so much farther away from the PETA Theater in QC. But it was certainly worth the long drives back and forth.
I know we haven't seen as many plays this year as some previous ones, but this stands out as one of the best we've seen for sure. It's an amazing example of what a good Filipino musical can be, given how it manages to make great use of a style of humor that is distinctly Filipino. I run across this in different plays and movies here and there, although I can't quite capture in words what I mean by this. You just know that the joke was a very Filipino one. It's harder to execute it in a manner that doesn't break the flow of the story or just feel out of place. Walang Aray is a masterclass in this blending of contemporary humor in a period setting with some very emotional material.
I'll write more about this at another time. I have to get up early tomorrow, so this post will need to remain relatively brief.
We also had a great game night last night. A run-through of all the games that we played includes the likes of Brick Like This!, 13 Animals, Raising Robots, Wondrous Creatures, Sushi Holic, Rebel Princess, Muffin Time, Railroad Tiles, and Chock-a-Block. I have many thoughts about some of the games that we played for the first time - so again I'll come back to these another time.
I need to be awake by 06:00am in order to get to Makati before 09:00am. One of those things.
