02EE0: Rolling Actual Dice

Saturday - Big D20

Today we made our first trip to Festival Mall since we moved south in order to play an RPG in person. It was an event of sorts organized by the Kabilang Dungeon folks, and this marks our first in-person RPG session in literally years. Our campaigns all shifted online during the pandemic lockdown and have yet to shift back in person. So we actually took a bit of time to figure out which dice to bring with us after relying on digital dice rollers all this time. So refreshing!

So we joined a one-shot for Mythic Bastionland, a very fantastical game of knights with sacred oaths in a very strange land. We started out as four sibling knights, but one had to leave early due to real-life obligations. That left the three us us to figure out a conflict related to succession after the passing of our father. Our archetypes were a tourney knight, a riddle knight, and my true knight, which made for a rather diverse party. I was quite committed to being honest and true while my brothers were more...colorful, to say the least. It was a rather fun adventure, and I'm glad that we got to play.

The venue itself, Hobby Kaiken, was quite interesting as well. It's a rather large gaming venue that also sells a lot of Magic: the Gathering cards and even has a bunch of display cases that people can rent to sell their own collectibles. So apart from our RPG tables, there was at least one group playing Wingspan, a couple of Magic players, and a rather large murder-mystery group.

I was sorely tempted to get some Magic cards, admittedly. Despite promising myself to stick to our Doctor Who preconstructed commander decks, there is that desire to get our hands on some of the more recent Universes Beyond cards. I'm still pining over the Final Fantasy Vivi card, but you need to find him in basic booster packs. They had a copy of the Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair cards, but that would have been super indulgent for a franchise of only modest interest. The costs of these items were the equivalent of a pretty decent board game, and we get a LOT more geeky utility out of board games versus these cards. Thankfully, I kept my head and managed not to splurge on anything.

Beyond that, we're just staying home tonight. The most we can hope for is board games with friends via BGA as no one else has offered (or more importantly, committed) to come over to game in person. Maybe Tobie and I will squeeze in a round of Magic just to help me scratch this itch I've been feeling lately.
