02ED2: A Return to Form

Saturday - Transgalactica

Last night's birthday show for Popstar Bench was definitely a unique experience. She has dedicated a lot of time and effort into getting better and better at impersonating and celebrating Lady Gaga. And this show felt like a major culmination of those efforts, given her recreations of various live performances, whether from her Mayhem concert (which Bench got to watch in person!) or even her more recent Coachella set. And while the overall show was still about the same length as other O Bar nights, it was condensed into about 19 very meaty sequences with many of the numbers lasting 15-20 minutes. This is in contrast with a performance count of 25-30 numbers most nights - so that gives you a better understanding of the scale of things.

We spent a better part of this morning in post-O Bar recovery mode, with our main activity of focus being some in-person board gaming. Members of our core group of friends opted to make the trek over to the Sietch. With so many new games at the Sietch and even among friends, it looks like we'll be doing a lot of learning games tonight. We started off with a friend's copy of House of Fadot, which is a medium-weight game that we had skipped despite it being by Vital Lacerda. It made for an interesting opening game, and I can see how he scaled back some mechanics he has also used in his larger, more complex games.

My main goal for the night was to get Transgalactica to the table. I had made a significant effort to get the game, as I was unable to find local suppliers that carried the title. I'm all for big space games with deep strategy, and this definitely fits the bill and then some. The art is gorgeous, even if the final design results in a game that isn't quite the most intuitive to interpret. But I'm enjoying the experience so far and I think we'll only get better at it in time.

It's good to be home. Our routines give us such joy.
