I had two crowdfunding board game expansions arrive today - what was tagged as the New Horizons expansions for Ahoy and the New Shores expansion for Zoo Tycoon. Fun!
For Ahoy, the expansion content consists of four different things: Rivals & Renegades, Fang & Fortune, the Treasure Pack, and an Upgrade Pack. The two alliterative boxes are the main expansion content with alternate factions to replace the original factions in the base game. The Treasure pack is a little add-on that adds a bit more variability to the game with asymmetric benefits at the start of the game. And finally, the upgrade pack brought in some beautiful metal coins and screen-printed versions of the ships from the base game to match the style of the expansion ships. All in all, it's a great collection of new content for the game.
Zoo Tycoon is a bigger expansion than I had initially expected, as the box is as big as the base game box. But beyond adding aquatic animals to the game, it just adds MORE of everything. So this box has like double the animals that the base game did, and a way to sort of mix and match animals to result in custom animal exchanges to make each game unique. We've only played the base game a number of times, as it is quite a big game, so this expansion should push us to play it a bit more.
We have a game night this Saturday, but it feels too soon for any of this expansion content, as I still need time to learn everything. Plus, it's going to be a shorter game night for us since we'll be going to an O Bar event the same night, so not the best time for learning complex games, maybe?
If anything, I have at least unboxed all the new game content, have gotten everything sorted, and then safely stowed them away. That's the first big step towards getting these games to the table - just figuring out how they're supposed to fit inside the different boxes is a way to dip your toes into how each game works based on its components. Plus, it's fun to organize.
Such is my nerdery.
