Last night was the birthday show for LetLet, who is pretty much a living legend in the local drag scene. She's been with O Bar since forever, and she is an amazing performer. When drag competition shows somewhat create the impression that "good" drag involves hard dancing, tricks, flips, and what have you, LetLet always comes to the stage with presence and manages to make a meaningful connection with the audience. She is forever a showgirl.
I've often joked that LetLet must have some sort of magic as she is one of the O Divas who are most likely to manage to drag good-looking patrons on stage. And that just stresses the unique way audiences respond to her. I've lost count of the many times we've brought someone to O Bar for the first time and they walk away loving LetLet in particular because of her unique charm.
Last night's show was an amazing celebration of her legacy as a drag artist, particularly as one of the O Divas. I was initially worried that she was going to work herself to death, as the opening number alone had her on stage for quite a significant amount of time. But then they gave her a seat at the owner's table, and she watched the bulk of the first set from there. And the rest of the performers, including the guest Lola Divas, all performed numbers in her honor - mainly the sort of numbers she has been performing at O Bar for years and years. For first-timers at the bar, this may not have made much sense. But for long-time O Bar patrons, it was a wonderfully touching tribute.
And we had a good mix of friends with us both at the table and at the bar as a whole. Birthday shows do bring out a lot of familiar faces after all. And it was pretty important to gather to celebrate this true diva.
LetLet is one of the hardest-working drag queens in the local scene, and I'll always admire that. She works pretty much every night O Bar is open, and despite her age, she'll still hold her own on stag,e whether in her solo performances or even the bigger group productions. Never underestimate her - she is a performer through and through, and you need to see her on stage to fully appreciate. It was nice when she appeared in the Drag Den Season 1 finale but that was barely a taste of her magic.
Again, Happy Birthday Mama Let! The birthday show was wonderfully you.
