02E8A: Korean Entertainment

Thursday - Squid and Sayote

For our lunchtime viewing, we've ended up watching Love in the Big City on Netflix. It's a one of the few queer Korean dramas we've encountered and it happens to be based on a novel of the same name. I was curious to see what this kind of a drama would be like, especially since I have no idea what the Korean gay scene is like. To my (our?) surprise, the gay life depicted thus far feels a lot like what we've seen in Western shows. Heck, it starts off feeling very Queer as Folk (US) down to the protagonist having a group of 3 other friends that he regularly goes to the club with. And this isn't necessarily bad or I guess not even that surprising - but it does speak to the sort of shared gay experience across countries. Or it's more about both Korea and the Philippines being heavily influenced by Western (US) media. The bulk of it still feels distinctly Korean, and that makes it interesting in its own right.

We're at the penultimate episode of Season 2 of The Devil's Plan, and I'm rather disappointed at how this season has played out. While the actual games and challenges have been interesting, the larger dynamics have been a little flat. At first, sending half of the players to prison felt quite jarring and still interesting, but it ended up being a major handicap over time, and the prison players really didn't have much of a chance of climbing back into the rankings. While not every game needs some sort of leveling mechanic that allows for wilder upsets in the game, it feels like this season could have benefited from a few more options apart from the secret in the prison. So the players we have in the final are rather...annoying. And I kind of don't care who will win, as there's only one way things will end on a "surprising" note - which feels unlikely. Ah, well, we'll find out how things go over the weekend.

Once we finish this show, we're gonna go back to a more traditional Korean drama. I'm not sure which one we'll go with, but we definitely need something light. So, some sort of a comedy or a rom-com. I'll go through our to-watch list and figure out our next steps from there.
