There were only three of us for last night's online board game session, but we still had a pretty good time. We played a good mix of games - Let's Go! to Japan, Next Station London, Tapestry, Carcassonne, Harmonies, and Sea Salt & Paper. These have largely become Board Game Arena staples for us since they're all games most friends on our group are typically familiar with playing without a need to refresh most of the rules. Plus BGA's implementation of these games are pretty solid and are typically a nice translation of the tabletop experience to digital.
BGA is great at providing a way to play familiar board games with friends remotely. But it's also great for getting access we don't have physical copies of if only to expand our gaming options.
Around lunch we watched Captain America: Brave New World. I didn't have the highest expectations for this movie but I still wanted to see it. Plus I wanted to see what the SM BF cinemas would be like, especially since they're all tagged as Director's Club cinemas. They certainly had the recliner seats and the free popcorn. But weirdly enough, the movie felt a little fuzzy around the edges like it was out of focus. Sound quality was pretty good but not the sort bass that you feel in your bones. And this was despite this being a superhero movie with a decent amount of action.
But the movie itself was...just okay? I really wish they hadn't revealed the involvement of the Red Hulk in the story since it made the character's in movie debut a lot less satisfying. The writing felt very weird - especially given how they made Sam Wilson recap the plot thus far every time they connected another dot in the larger narrative. It felt like an effort to coddle the audience with in-character dialog but in a very heavy-handed way. And some characters felt practically superfluous given how little they did in the story.
And now we're in the middle of our first in person board game night with a friend we're meeting for the first time as well. As much as BGA nights are fun, we don't get to make the most of our physical game collection when we play online. Plus we do have a goal of cultivating a local pool of players that we can game with regularly. Let's face it - nearer players are more likely to make the effort to come over versus anyone who lives on the other side of the toll gates or whatever.
Hope it's the start of more game nights at this new Sietch.
