02E27: Reading Updates

Wednesday - Sad Sisig Quesadillas

Work was a mixed bag today. A lot of things to do but it wasn't like a lot of exciting things. It was a lot of detailed work and I had to really cross my Ts and dot my Is carefully because mistakes could be costly. And while it wasn't the most imaginative stuff. it was still quite fulfilling in its own way. But it's the variety of fulfillment that includes arranging things in near lines and rows or finding exactly the right size of things to fit into a limited space. But it was still a good day because of things like that.

On the reading front, I'm steadily working through the last of the Krakoan Age X-titles. The delay was more because I was previously reading the big cross-title compilations (e.g. Dawn of X, Reign of X) and didn't realize they had stopped doing that towards the end. So I had to switch to getting the compiled versions of the individual titles in order to find out how it all comes to its end.

I was never all that into the X-books before Tobie made me read Whedon's Astonishing run. But I dove in headfirst when Hickman took the reigns and created this whole Krakoan utopia for muntantkind. It was a very compelling reimagining of mutant history and one that really pushed the limits of what these characters could accomplish. And that made for some very exciting stories.

Working my way through the Fall of X, I'm not sure I'm all that happy with what the creative teams after Hickman have done with the books. The way they've maneuvered the end feels a little abrupt with some very exotic monkey wrenches thrown into the mix of things just to keep things exciting. Orchis' big plan...is weird? But at least it's as bad as the Cylon's "plan" in the reimagined BSG series or things like that. I'm holding judgment until I get the full picture by going through the different books, but I've at least gotten through the main X-Men books and I'm now reading the Fall of the House of X/Rise of the Powers of X compilation and it is...wild.

I should go back and clear the last of the core Percy Jackson books, but that has been too much of a struggle. I read a bit here and there but I struggle to keep focused on it. I only committed to reading the books as "light reading" which could help me generate more of a buffer for my reading goal for the year. But beyond Book 3, I feel the story slowing down - or maybe I'm just getting tired of the "format" of the series and how it is written.

After all this...I need to invest myself into a more fulfilling series to read.
