02E1D: Monthly Gaming Report

Sunday - Mythwind

After skipping the January session because of the move, we got to join this month's FGTC board game session for a full night of fun. We played a great mix of big games and quicker games and had a lot of good catching up in between everything else.

Our warm-up and in-between games included the likes of the family-friendly roll-and-write Takenokolor (from the same universe as Takenoko), and the Korean-exclusive Splendor: Pokémon. There were multiple sessions of both games played at different times whenever one group or another was waiting for the other to finish their game. Both are cute games in their own right, but I definitely love the Pokémon game more because it's just so good - a solid innovation of the base Splendor experience.

Our mid-weight games included Harmonies, Moon, and Steam Up. Interestingly enough, Takenokolor, Harmonies, and Steam Up were all games that we had first experienced digitally whether via Tabletop Simulator or Board Game Arena. It was nice to experience them in person for a change versus just the digital implementation, especially since it makes it easier to properly understand how the scoring for each game works versus letting BGA do the heavy lifting automatically. And Moon is another game from the people who brought us Villagers and Streets, although each of the games feel very different from one another.

The heavy hitters for the night were Ark Nova, Viticulture, Mythwind, and Fromage. We played Ark Nova with the Marine Worlds expansion again and I got an early lead but didn't manage to secure the win in the end. The other table played a round of Viticulture because we realized one of our players had never experienced it before when it had been quite the staple for the rest of the group, especially during the lockdown period. Mythwind is the cozy campaign game that we haven't been able to resume since July of last year. And Fromage is a brand-new game that we learned how to play last night. It's all about making cheese and it's quite quirky and plays surprisingly quickly for a game of its level of complexity.

It was a good mix of games and we all had a lot of fun. The drive to Boni naturally takes longer given the location of the new Sietch but it was worth the drive. I just hope that we'll be able to host friends for game nights at the Sietch sooner rather than later as well in order to get more gaming in.
