I expected last night's game night to be a little shorter than our regular Friday routine given friends mentioned they'd be late because of work obligations. But one thing led to another and we ended up starting pretty much on time and played through a great set of games. And while it wasn't our direct intention, we also ended up trying out a lot of new games that had arrived at the Sietch quite recently.
As one of our players couldn't really stay long, we made sure to include some quick games in the mix to add to their play count despite time constraints. Ra has become one such game given how quick it is to each and how quickly it plays while still providing a rather fulfilling strategic gaming experience. We also played two rounds of Mooncake Master, a great Singaporean game that packs a lot of fun into a small package.
But we also made sure they had one big new game before going - thus we brought out Survival of the Fattest, a new game that offers a cute critter deckbuilding experience centered around finding food in the forest. It has a rather interesting game loop that took a bit of time to get used to but was still quite fun overall.
Despite being done with the campaign, we at least played one round of The Initiative and the game beyond story is still quite challenging.
The rest of the game night ended up being dedicated to different new games. We first played through several tutorial scenarios for AI Space Puzzle, a cooperative deduction game that promises to be quite a fun challenge for future game nights. Then we finally took time to learn how to play Nocturne one of the latest releases from Flatout Games, the same people who brought the world games like Cascadia and Verdant. While we're not a big fan of the mystical fox theme they choose for this game, the actual gameplay is quite fun as a sort of different spin on an auction game. Our final game for the night was still technically a new one, this being Cascadia: Rolling Hills, which is the companion game to Cascadia: Rolling Rivers. The dice mix is a bit different but it's still the same core game experience. And we ended the session with very, very close scores, which does make for a great end to a game night.
We weren't able to make game plans with friends today, so it's a chill Saturday night instead. We stepped out for a hearty lunch at Tang and then walked around High Street for a bit in search of coffee and dessert. Now we're still getting through finally watching Oppenheimer as I write this post and we'll see what else we end up doing for the rest of the night.
I hope you all have a great weekend as well.
