Last night's game night was a little shorter than preferred but still a lot of fun. We started with a Magic: the Gathering commander session with our mix of Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings decks. The first half of the game was just Tobie and me trying to survive the rather relentless onslaught of the Riders of Rohan. But some of my weird cards of enforcing peace and civility brought me some breathing room to maneuver and nearly win the game. But as is the case of Commander games, it boiled down to me risking everything in a final assault, not succeding, and eventually losing to the next player's big push. But that's the fun of the format and I appreciate playing Magic in this manner, even if we're not bothering to create new decks and things like that.
We were joined by other friends whom we hadn't seen in a while and so we had to shift to 5-player stuff. We played a few rounds of Startups because it's a true classic among Oink games and then one one of Mountain Goats, because I need to get more movement out of my small games from Allplay. Sadly, everyone had to go home earlier, so that left us alone of the rest of the night.
Tobie and I made the most of the night by sitting down to learn to play Iki, which is a board game that Tobie got secondhand from a friend. It looked a little intimidating given all the components and game mechanics. But once we properly sat down to play it, it wasn't so bad but still quite complex. We initially flubbed one of the rules which made it way more difficult for us than it should have been and so we had to reset after playing through the first three rounds of the game. It's sorta like Tokaido with a pretty tricky rondel and shopkeepers that seem very eager to retire.
This afternoon we got to catch a local staging of Once on This Island, which is something I've been seriously looking forward to more because of the show. I've loved the music for quite some time but had never managed to watch a proper staging of the musical until now. It was a pretty decent show with some audio issues, but that seems common across a lot of local shows. It was still nice to see all this performed on stage within the context of the full story versus just listening to the official album.
We're just waiting for a friend to come over for more board games and that's is what is going to make our Saturday night properly exciting.
