02D6D: Double Movie Night

Saturday - Tang Bossam

My first night back in Manila was definitely a lot of fun. Instead of arranging for a game night or heading out to O Bar, I spent a better part of the week waiting for movie tickets to be made available for online booking for Friday so that Tobie I could catch up on recent releases that we missed because of my trip. It was rather lucky that we still managed to snag tickets to a screening of Deadpool & Wolverine as I figured that it was pretty close to being pulled out as part of the regular movie cycle.

What was kinda crazier was that the High Street Cinema had did that thing where they alternate two different movies in the same cinema, so right after our Deadpool screening, there was a last full show for Alien: Romulus, which admittedly was the higher priority movie for us. Naturally, I was determined to make sure that we had the exact same seats for both screenings because that just makes things more fun.

Deadpool was more fun than we had expected and was a nice little love letter to the whole Fox move universe that came before the juggernaut (haha) that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, some of Deadpool's humor gets tiring over time and it's not like this was the most well-thought-out story for a movie, but it was still a lot of fun. Alas, this was also the 4DX theater of the cinema, so there was a lot of ridiculous shaking around without true rhyme or reason.

Plus Cassandra Nova was super kickass.

I'm glad that the schedules allowed us to end the night with the new Alien movie because that was definitely an experience. Even the whole 4DX bit was rather well-done and not overwhelming, which made for a richer movie experience overall. The story is solid and stands well enough on its own, but of course, the movie also features a lot of great easter eggs and respect for the existing movie canon that rewards diehard fans like us. The Alien movies are an interesting intersection of our interests as it's a science fiction horror franchise that allows me to use geekery to bridge the gap toward love for horror movies.

I'm super, super glad that we got to catch this in an actual movie theater versus just watching it at home. It's definitely the sort of movie that deserves the full cinema experience and Tobie and I enjoyed it so much.

And since we had skipped dinner to get through our double-movie date night, we then made our way to Tang for a hearty late-night Korean dinner.
