0126F: An Unplanned Ryan Gosling Movie Mini-thon

I'm feeling much better now - a full day of rest has done my body a lot of good. Still dealing with a bit of the sniffles here and there but at least the fever seems to have passed for the most part. And despite an earlier promise not to go out any more this week, it looks like O Bar Ortigas is calling out to us again tonight - especially given Dee Dee Holliday, one of our favorite O Divas, will be performing tonight.

I know, it doesn't take much for us to head out at times. I guess we're pretty much "easy" in that regard.

The past 24 hours have involved a lot of sleeping, a good massage session, quality time playing Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends and two Ryan Gosling movies - and we're not even particularly big fans of his, at least not yet.

The first movie that we watched was the independent Cannes Film Festival piece Drive, which is the crime noir kind of flick that oddly reminded me of Brick with pacing somewhat reminiscent of Falling Down, at least in terms of how I remember that movie. But Tobie and I both enjoyed the movie a lot, especially with the participation of the always compelling Carey Mulligan (Run Sally Sparrow!) We followed this up by watching Crazy, Stupid, Love, which Tobie had already watched without me some time ago.

It's interesting to note that there seems to be a powerful movement in support of Ryan Gosling as a leading man and quite the icon of sorts. While it was only in Crazy, Stupid, Love did I get to appreciate that he is rather ripped (and not in the overly bulky way many Hollywood stars seem to be aiming for), he's really not the kind of person that I'd find to be attractive. It may not seem to make sense how a guy with a body like that can fall into the category of people that I don't find to be attractive, but that's just how it is. He's a great actor who has found his niche in terms of how he carries himself and all that, but that's all that I see that's worth admiring at this point.

There's a weird thuggish quality about his face. And it's not the "bad boy look" if you want to call it that. He looks rather disturbing - maybe it's the weird dead-like quality of his eyes which creates a rather cold and chilling stare. And that's just not something I can go for. At least with the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal he's quite the complete package of being gorgeous with beautiful doe eyes and these days quite the ripped body. And he's in that sweet spot between body types that both Tobie and I like, so he's one of the few actors that we find really, really hot.

But beyond the question of whether or not there's water in the argument that Ryan Gosling should have been People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive this year, both movies were definitely great entertainment experiences that I'm glad we made time for. Both were intelligent, but in very different ways given the distinct movie genres each covered. Drive is a great crime noir piece - a remarkable piece of film making by a director who knows how to make good use of longer shots and with actors who hold firm to the value of silent scenes.

And now to prep for the bar again with a belly happily filled by the turbo broiler chicken that Tobie had prepared for us. It was quite the lovely dinner, perfectly accompanied by this year's Doctor Who Christmas special.

If anything, I'll still try not to hit the alcohol too heavily tonight. Another statement to add to the ever-growing index of Famous Last Words that we all seem to gather over time.
