It took me a better part of the night, but I got my Project Hail Mary game night article written last night and scheduled it to publish at noon today. It was a different writing exercise from writing a straight-up review of a game since I was using a theme (the book/movie) and then curating a list of games tied to it. It wasn't about a single designer or publisher. It wasn't even about a game mechanic. It was all about capturing the beats of the story using board games, and it felt pretty good to write something like that. Writing reviews can get a little rote and routine, but this felt like a more creative exercise. I have one more article planned already, but I still need to figure out what other types of articles I can explore in the coming weeks.
I had promised myself that I'd dedicate today to clearing another night's worth of O Bar videos to clear space on my phone before tonight's event. But one thing led to another, and I ended up working on other things.
What did I do instead?
- Final tweaks on the article - there were still some typos and some formatting issues on the site
- Documented/scanned the board games Tobie had recently acquired secondhand
- Unboxed and sleeved Wyrmspan Academy
- Sleeved Speakeasy, even all the Solo cards, for some reason.
- Finally unboxed and sleeved Dune: Imperium - Bloodlines and fit all the game contents in the Dune: Imperium - Uprising box.
What has been driving me a little batty after all that (and ate up more time) was that I was left with an extra pack of Mayday USA Chimera size card sleeves after all that. I do my best to min-max our card sleeve inventory, especially for atypical sizes outside of the "standard" size I can get penny sleeves for. I had specifically ordered 4 packs, which means that I had done the math using BoardGameGeek's "Sleeve It!" feature to tabulate exactly how many packs I needed to cover particular games. I needed two packs for Speakeasy and one pack for the Wyrmspan expansion. But what was the last pack for?
I'm in the middle of preparing dinner, and I still haven't figured out what the last game was. There are a number of games that use the same size of card sleeves, but I've already sleeved most of them, and the unsleeved games need more than a single pack. It must have been for one of the newer games that arrived over the past month, but I double-checked all of those, and the remaining ones don't need this particular type of sleeve. We don't have anything big scheduled tomorrow, and I know a part of my brain is going to keep trying to solve this puzzle.
Anyway, that's what the past 24 hours have been like. We're about to have dinner, and then it'll be time to get ready for O Bar. I hope you're all having a good weekend as well.
