02E79: Monday Movie Log

Monday - Kimchi Soup

It's Election Day in the Philippines and Vesak Day in Singapore, so both Tobie and I didn't have to deal with work.

The weather this afternoon and tonight has been rather crazy. Some rain would have been welcome. The crazy rain we've gotten instead is rather overwhelming. We tried to rush out for snacks when things seemed calmer, but of course, it came down hard by the time we got to 7-11. And then it was even worse when we got home and I needed to open the gate and such.

Anyway, last night we got caught up on current TV shows we've been watching like 9-1-1 and Wheel of Time. Today has been more about movies since we had more time. Plus I was trying to catch up on a lot of O Bar videos still in queue.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice wasn't as terrible as feared, but it wasn't great either. I didn't have particularly high hopes for this rather late sequel, but they made the most of things, I suppose. Plus they still managed to have some genuinely great moments here and there.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was actually better than I had expected, but I can see how the trailer may have set the wrong expectations for the actual experience. It was a solid effort to jazz up a bit of military history. It's a Guy Ritchie production but also not quite as crazy some of his other movies. We quite enjoyed this.

Wicked Little Letters was also charming and also based on actual events, apparently. I am a sucker for anything with Olivia Coleman and this was enjoyable, but admittedly not very exceptional.

Havoc was bad even for a Netflix movie. I was expecting mindless action and decent popcorn entertainment. We got too much time invested in setting up the story, not enough action, and some very silly shootouts at the end.

I knew Section 31 wasn't going to be very good, but I didn't expect it to be that bad. It didn't feel like Star Trek. It didn't even feel like something involving the action Section 31 organization. Tobie hit the nail on the head when he said it felt like the results of adapting an actual Star Trek RPG session into a movie script.
