Former President Duterte was arrested today after the ICC finally issued a warrant accusing him of crimes against humanity. As of the time of this blog post, he's already on a plane headed for the Hague in the Netherlands. This has made my social media feeds look like the last elections all over again with very strong voices on all sides. It is certainly ironic for Duterte supporters to cite due process and human rights now given the man himself had repeatedly stated that he didn't care about human rights. At the same time, this is just an arrest and not a conviction, so I remain a little cautious about "celebrating" anything. Today's arrest is certainly an important first step, but it is also but one of many more needed before actual justice for the EJK victims can be achieved.
On my end, work was pretty productive. I still had reports to work on, a client WIP to attend, and other bits and bobs. It wasn't as busy as Monday had been, but I did try to clear as much work as possible since I'd largely be out of circulation tomorrow because of my flight home.
This trip was a little shorter than previous ones, but I guess the way things unfolded also made it feel faster than usual. We had a lot of stuff to deal with at work, so that took up a lot of headspace. And then even during the weekend, the household had a lot of different appointments and whatnot so I spent most of the weekend just with my nephews. I didn't even manage to meet any of my friends of the area as I assumed their lack of communication also indicated they were busy...plus who would have wanted to go out in the weekend rains?
At least we got to share a nice omakase dinner tonight to wrap things up. I'm bound to be back in a few months or maybe my sister and her family will have a reason to fly to Manila and it'll all even out. Such is the nature of our multi-country family life.
I've mostly packed at this point save for what I'm wearing to sleep tonight and my toiletries. I've completed my eTravel form online and I've double-checked my seat to see if I still don't have a seatmate (I don't!) So I'm generally ready for my flight home tomorrow.
I just need to get a decent amount of sleep, wake up early enough to hang out with the nephews some more and maybe see them off to school. Then I'll dash straight to the airport with just enough time for some quick shopping at the terminal before it's time to get myself back to Manila.
