Work went pretty well for the most part. I cleared the last of my big overdue items and now I can breathe easier. I'm sure other things will come in tomorrow, but at least I've cleared the worst of my backlog from last week. Upwards and onwards.
I have mixed feelings about our progress on the new Sietch today. We got help to thoroughly clean the bathroom and the kitchenette, which is great. We even got the cabinets cleared of the older things that were there and now we can store other things. Then after work my project was finding a better way to rearrange my larger Eaglemoss Star Trek model ships within the existing shelves in a manner that would still allow us to close the cabinet doors. Tobie still hopes to get the rest of them removed at some point, but he has encountered a lot of challenges on that front given the frustrating combination of painted-over nails, old wood that sometimes splits apart when he drills, and other hallmarks of an older house. We have come up with a decent enough arrangement for now, although I know my problems will continue as Fanhome has taken over the whole licensed Star Trek model ships thing.
And...that was the main thing we got settled. There were other books and miscellaneous items that Tobie moved to the home office (that we still need to arrange), and we even moved the electric skillet to the main kitchen as well. But yeah, it didn't feel like the most impressive bit of organizing for the day. It probably didn't help that I finished work a little late, so we only had so much time to get the moving-in-related work done.
Tomorrow the plan is to move the big shelf that Tobie had set up a bit forward to make space for a smaller shelf that he had also assembled. It's currently right by the door and blocks a mirror that has been fixed on the wall since the time Tobie lived here, and it feels like quite the shame to leave it obscured. We haven't been 100% on where to put this huge shelf precisely because of this constraint and now that we have a lot more empty space around the Sietch to work with, we feel like moving it forward still makes sense. It'll create a bit of an entrance corridor to get into the house, but this feels like a better option versus creating a similar corridor leading to the bathroom. Once we fully settle that shelf, we can then fully load it with stuff and get more things off the floor.
Getting all that settled should open the door for us to finally assemble the poker table and maybe figure out the final shape of the living room area. It's going to be a bit of a tight fit, but I think it'll work. If it doesn't, then we'll need to rethink the large sofa (that is technically a sofa bed) that came with the house and we've been loathe to get rid of us just yet.
Breaking down our moving in efforts into these smaller projects and "sprints" of a sort has been the only way to make this whole project feel less overwhelming. I'm still chomping at the bit to properly move in, but I also recognize that we need to get all this settled so we can do a final cleaning effort and make sure we don't suffer from allergy attacks while trying to go to sleep.
We can do this!
