02DF8: Sietch-in-a-Box

Thursday - Moving Boxes

Okay, not literally just ONE box. But I wanted to go for a reference with the blog title.

Despite all my stress over all the permits getting approved before the movers would get here, everything worked out pretty okay. The remaining artifacts of our nearly 8 years of living in BGC have been reduced to some 70+ boxes and wrapped up containers - many of them vaguely labeled as "books" and "toys" because the average mover can't really catalog board games or something. Given they had managed to finish everything by the afternoon, I am glad that we put some effort into moving some of the stuff ourselves because we might not have made it to the 05:00pm cutoff for offsite workers in the condo.

We probably should have put a bit more effort into organizing things a bit more and sorting out things we wanted to get rid of versus what we actually wanted to bring with us. The movers were crazily efficient - so there was little time to really make decisions as they packed up our possessions into boxes upon boxes upon boxes. They would just check in with us periodically and ask if it was okay to clear this cabinet or that shelf and then BOOM, everything would end up in boxes. I don't think anything will be lost in this move - or at least not left behind. It'll just be a question of figuring out where everything went as the primary sorting methodology was what room was the source of the contents of any of the boxes. A label like "toys" can hide any number of things including my Star Trek ships or board games or Transformers or maybe one stuffed toy that ended up in the same receptacle. It was a little chaotic but it was definitely faster than what Tobie and I were managing on my own.

By the end of the process, we no longer had any tables, and even the dining room chairs had been wrapped up and prepped for transport. The only things left are what came with the unit, which thankfully included the bed. For a moment I was half tempted to have us check in somewhere because they really packed up everything down to the bag of miscellaneous plastic utensils that had accumulated every time we ordered delivery and the restaurant ignored our note to skip the cutlery.

But today was just the packing day. Tomorrow is the moving day. And then the rest of the month (or even the quarter?) will be unpacking and sorting days. Nothing is going to get lost, but we're also not going to find our stuff until we get things sorted on the other side. And we're not even sure how we're going to fit everything in the new space given how much volume these 70+ boxes currently occupy in the now mostly empty Sietch.

It's a lot to process, so it's just as well things went as quickly as they did. We've been ordering out for everything since the coffeemaker was one of the first things to get packed away and that's just the way things are. I think the full reality of the move won't fully sink in until the last box gets unloaded at the other house and we're left figuring out what to do with our still-in-boxes lives.

We're going to miss BGC. But that'll come a little later. For now, we just need to move.
