Despite momentary temptations to go to O Bar for a Friday night out, we opted to spend the holiday at home. After our colorful evening, we played a couple of board games to make a fun night of things.
We played through the second mission of Batman: Everybody Lies after terribly flubbing the first case the other night. We did much better this time around and we got all the answers to the final report questions correct, so that's a relief. I feel like we're in a better position to handle the final case better, although overall the game isn't quite what I hoped it to be. We generally enjoyed the core Detective games and Dune: House Secrets was actually a pretty solid adaptation. But this Batman version...feels somehow lacking. There was the desire to include 4 distinct narrative paths for the different persona characters in the game and it's not easy to have everything link back to a single over-arching case for the team to solve. There is the oddness of not having Batman directly involved in the cases - at least Sherlock was just several steps ahead of the players in Consulting Detective.
In the spirit of moving more of our collection, we followed that up with breaking open the Rise of the Empire campaign expansion for Imperial Settlers. This started as a fan expansion on BGC that got codified into an official release. It's a nice additional layer added to the existing game without making players need to learn an entirely different experience. We don't have a lot of the campaign experience from the first session alone, but we're pretty excited to see how the game will develop over the sessions - provided our respective empires survive the test of time.
Our final game for the night was another Origame release that I picked up during my last trip. This was the cute little dice-rolling game Cubemelt: Getting Dicey, which is pretty easy to teach but tricky to win. Sure, dice games can be pretty random, but this game includes a fair amount of player agency still. Plus it's super cute, so it has that in its favor.
For today, we've taken it pretty easy thus far. I finished reading Old Man's War and I'm keen to explore the rest of this military science fiction series. We watched another episode of The Devil's Plan and we love how it takes the game experience of something like The Genius but gives it a distinct Korean reality show flair to it. And we finally finished the second half of Monkey Man, which is a brilliant directorial debut for Dev Patel.
We took a good walk around the area before settling back at home in preparation for tonight's game night.
