After yesterday's promise to read the Root RPG core book, I managed to get through it today and I've already started on the Travelers & Outsiders supplement. I'm rather impressed at how well the RPG managed to take reference from the original board game yet still managed to present its own angle on things. I was initially worried that there wouldn't be enough story to base a full RPG around given the original game factions only have limited write-ups. But the material I've read thus far have really leaned into what the Vagabonds represent within the game while using the war between the other factions as a fascinating backdrop for larger stories.
I think I might actually be able to run a short campaign for this sometime, should I work up the nerve to do so and find a group of TRPG players who are also familiar enough with Root. But man, I think this is easier to run than the likes of Doctor Who or The Expanse quite frankly. It probablty helps that the IP in question isn't overly restrictive. You can see how that sets particular limits given the adherence to realism in The Expanse and funny systems in others like the separate running mechanic in Doctor Who.
Let's see how that goes. At the very least, I feel less guilty about pledging my support for the Kickstarter campaign for the new Ruins & Expeditions supplement.
In other news, I want to document here that I did some weight training yesterday after months of sticking to (or hiding behind) yoga. Yoga is great and all and I love the meditative quality to it, but I also recognize that I haven't been doing more strenous workouts and I've steadily been gaining weight again. It's just one workout, but it's still something. I'm still nervous about pushing too hard and injuring myself again - which is why I stuck to yoga today. I'm trying to be smart about how I handle my fitness efforts and with luck I'll be able to get back on track.
Plus maybe I feel a little hotter after even modest dumbbell work 😅
