With the Root RPG Ruins & Expeditions supplement in the final hours of its Kickstarter, I find myself wanting to finally read through the original Root RPG core book. I had pledged for the first Kickstarter and was happy with what we got but still relied on Tobie to run a one-shot game for us. And while I never know when I'll ever work up the nerve to run a game, I should at least read the material.
I've only truly read through two RPG systems to a degree where I feel I could run a game - and I have run limited one-shots for both. The first is the Doctor Who RPG (formerly DWAITAS) and the other is The Expanse RPG (which also has a Backerkit campaign for new material). It's not lost on me that both are brand-related RPGs because I am that person who gets on board with systems based on franchises I love. I also went mostly all-in for the Avatar Legends RPG campaign and again have only played a one-shot under Tobie.
The challenge of liking games like this is that for the full effect, it helps to have players who are familiar with the franchises and thus are excited to dive into the respective story worlds. It becomes a natural hook to get players excited about the game versus completely original systems where you have to sell the world concept first. So it's a pro and a con to be a game tied to an existing IP. And as big as the audiences for these particular franchises can be, finding the intersection of fans and willing players makes for a lot of work.
In the meantime, I'm committing to invest some of my reading time to at least covering the books I've pledged for Root and eventually Avatar. I still feel like it's more likely that I might be able to run Root more than Avatar even for people who don't know the game lore all that well.
Let's start right now.
