In recent years, waking up with random back pains or soreness in my arms has become an expected annoyance. Sometimes it's nothing major and it fades quickly. Today is one of those days when the minor pain that I woke up with seems to have grown into something more annoying and somewhat debilitating. It once again hurts when I twist my body, so it's something back-related that affects a lot of my general movement. The worst bits are getting up from a chair or from bed, and quirky things like taking my shirt off. I'm taking painkillers for now and will avoid yoga tomorrow morning. In my experience, there's not much else that I can do other than wait it out and avoid strenuous activity in the interim. And given we're scheduled to go to O Bar on Friday night...I really need to recover sooner.
Beyond that, my workday was filled with a LOT of interviews because I've just started screening for a new position and naturally, we have a lot of applicants. Job posts tend to get the most applicants within the first week so it's a rather critical time. But it's also when you get a lot of applicants who really won't make the cut but they try anyway and this initial sifting through resumes can take a lot of work.
Even the interviews themselves are tricky. I find that I need a chance to mentally calibrate as to what types of responses work for me with respect to a particular role. As much as we try to capture everything that's important to us in the job ad, there will inevitably be intangibles that you'll only really figure out as you talk to people. Even when we hire for the same role over a span of time, the types of applicants we get in one year will be totally different from another year. So I'm right in that sort of burn-in period (or whatever we want to call it) as I start interviewing candidates and figuring things out. But I appreciate that I now have more of a system in place to at least ensure that my interviews are as consistent in structure as possible so I have a common basis for comparison.
I have quite a number of interviews lined up for this week, so wish me luck, I guess?
