Everything is relative. What can feel like a big deal to you can be nothing to someone else. What might be a good deed in one person's eyes can feel like some sort of an insult instead. It's strange how what we carry with us - literally, mentally, emotionally - can shape how we view the world around us. Our experiences and how we process them have a lot of power whether we realize it or not.
That's why empathy is such an important thing. Our ability to even just try to understand the perspective of others is a true gift and I'm pretty sure it has played a key role in how the human race has gotten as far as it has. That doesn't make it easy. If anything, being genuinely empathetic towards others needs deliberate effort and focus. It's important but also doesn't necessarily come naturally. And even if you can pick up on what other people are feeling, figuring out how to respond (if at all) is a whole other level of challenge.
We can all at least try to do better. That's a good start at least. We can't wait for other people to do better in this area - it's the sort of change that we start ourselves and trust that everyone else catches up eventually.
Hopefully.
