So last night we stuck to playing board games online on Board Game Arena and we still had a lot of fun. We mainly stuck to games that we were generally familiar with just to make it easier to dive in. But in some cases, it was our first time to try the digital adaptation of some of the games. So last night's line-up included New York Zoo, Tapestry, Ark Nova, Sea Salt & Paper, and Incan Gold. It was a good mix off games to go through and we had a lot of fun.
For the afternoon we watched The Sandbox Collective's staging of Little Shop of Horrors. Apart from the movie, the only other time we've gotten to catch a live staging of this was a Blue Repertory production many years ago. That had been a pretty good effort for a school production and I was eager to see how a bigger company would handle the show. And my feelings after were...a bit mixed.
No doubt, the assembled cast was pretty solid. I'm always excited to catch Nyoy Volante on stage and I'm glad we happened to have gotten tickets for their cast's schedule. This is oddly one of the musicals that I really know the songs of well and the cast certainly did the music justice. But there were a lot of things about the production as a whole that struck us as being rather odd and somewhat detrimental to the overall experience.
Beyond little annoyances like audio levels being all over the place from the very start are somewhat understandable. But Little Shop is a play mainly about the monster plant Audrey II and a particular depiction of what it's supposed to look like. This staging went in a very different direction not just in terms of the practical implementation of a massive plant monster but even the overall aesthetic by going more for eyes for some reason instead of more tentacles and the distinct mouth of the monster. I think it worked more for people who had no context to the story. As someone who loves the movie and the various stage incarnations, the way they went about this felt quite underwhelming.
Well, at least we get to play more board games tonight to balance out the weekend. From online games yesterday to in-person games tonight.
