Metro Manila Community Quarantine - Day 1220
I just finished Foolproof Hiring, which is yet another book by the folks behind Topgrading. While I do see promise in their hiring methodology (which is why I keep reading their books), I wish that they provided more details instead of just writing about how great they are. The books are overly aggressive in selling themselves and their coaching services versus actually talking about the methodology a bit more. Needless to say, I'm rather disappointed with this last book and I hope to have found something better to read.
Reading Scaling Up has gotten me and my sister to curate a list of business books to read as we try to find ways to improve the business and all that fun stuff. And I've been putting more of a focus on People Solutions items, but it's not as easy to find books with real meat. A lot of time they either go very fluffy and lofty versus others that just try to hard sell a coaching system or a software solution. It's hard to find decent references with more detailed instructions or examples for crafting things like scorecards or even larger performance management systems and standards.
It's not a dealbreaker - books aren't the other research media that I can work with, although it is a preferred channel. With luck, I'll be able to find more information on YouTube or maybe even on LinkedIn if I did hard enough. I have things I'm trying to achieve and I'm hoping that the changes I do end up implementing make sense in the long term while still staying aligned with our particular corporate culture.
I have a copy of Who that I had gotten on sale, but it's yet another book from the same team. So instead, I'm trying out Change to Strange to see if that will inspire me more and the first chapter or so does seem to be promising.
At the same time, I'm way behind on my overall reading goals, so I've been trying to aggressively pick up my reading pace. I'll have to fill up with fluff stuff like comics to move the needle faster but at the same time, I still need to balance other obligations like making time to process the remaining O Bar photos and videos in my queue.
